Welcome to The Tiny Home Project

Hi there! This site is going to document the building of my tiny home. At a hundred and thirty square feet, my entire house will be the size of an average bedroom. Wish me luck!

2 Months, 12 Days

Update! Over the last little bit Edgar (master caulker, roofer first-class, accidental foreman) and I: fixed the gap in the roof that was funneling rainwater directly onto the porch; removed the deck cap (the air in/outake for the gas heater) and caulked in, on, and around it with some lovely silver silicone caulk; and built a propane locker.

(Much nicer.)

Hi! Thanks for holding...

Oh, man, has it been a busy few weeks! On April 19th we moved the house from SIAST to my parent's place, replacing views like these:

with (almost-as-breathtaking) views like these:

The people who are responsible for giving me something to move came down to eat some cookies and listen to me blubber my thanks:

Day 30

I suck at blogging. When the needle really hits the record there are a hundred and one things I should be doing - Ordering parts! Designing cabinets! Banging my head against a wall! - and blogging the progress seems indulgent. So. I procrastinate, and as a result, I have a ton of stuff to update about. Like! My water heater, the Eccotemp FVI 12 LP isn't gonna work. You can't vent a space as small as mine to supply sufficient oxygen to the heater.

Day 19

I ordered the roof today! I went with the plain galvanized steel - the red would have faded in the sun, plus, the fewer weird chemicals in, on, and around my house, the better. The door opening is framed in, so Arlen of GP is going to stop in to measure the opening tomorrow so they can get started on my door. Honestly, he could have just asked us for the measurements, but I think he wants to see the casita for himself.

Day 18

Today I lay in my little loft bedroom for the first time. Admittedly I was also laying atop a hammer, a tool belt, several framing nails and what looked like an electric turkey carver. Still! It's not nothing.

They're attaching the roof with hurricane clips. Yeah.

Day 16

Hi. Uh. Sorry I disappeared, there - somehow over the last week or two I caught EVERY AIRBORNE ILLNESS KNOWN TO MEDICAL SCIENCE and have been distinctly and utterly out of commission. But! I managed to drag my sorry tuchus to SIAST today to see my casita:

Day Nine

Not much to say today:

I think the photos say it all:

It's all terribly exciting, really:

Day Eight

Progress is being made! In fact, things are happening so fast I feel like I've been set to spinning. The insulation in the floor is in and the plywood subfloor is down. The walls are almost completely framed now - they should be standing and secure by Friday afternoon.

Once the rough opening for the door is framed in, I can take those measurements to GP and have them start on my door, so the door could be ready as early as the week after next.

Day Four

The deck is stripped, aluminum flashing in on, the floor framing is down and the insulation is in!

And again!

The void without flashing or insulation is going to be my tiny, tiny porch:

Day Three

Day three! I took a picture of some very industrious gentlemen preparing to strip most of the decking off the trailer:

Once the decking is stripped off (as well as any extraneous metal bits) they are going to lay down aluminum flashing to protect against rodents (cute, but not on my kitchen counters) and moisture, then frame the floor, then insulate using polystyrene board. Exciting!
